About the Department



The Department of Mathematics from its inception in 1921, as old as the institution, has rendered a century of yeoman service to generations of students, through Mathematics education at the UG level from 1951, PG level from 2002 and Research level since 2016.


Mathematics being at the cusp of all physical sciences has been the bedrock of science education in this institution. Mathematics student strength has been growing phenomenally. The energetic intellectual environment is nurtured by stalwartly motivated faculty and provides an opportunity to pursue research in front line areas of Mathematics as well as in interdisciplinary areas of sciences and technology.

The syllabi caters to the diverse needs of academic and career goals of the stake holders. It covers core subjects and includes bridge courses, vacation programmes, internship programmes, inclusive learning, one–to-one mentoring, compulsory research projects ( with internal or external guides), seminars, workshops, conferences, inter-collegiate and intra-collegiate programmes.

The dedicated, disciplined, determined and dear 16 plus faculty of the department make all these happen and are unique to themselves.

The doctoral students are provided with training opportunities and facilities that are conducive for research under the guidance of professors with excellent research experience.

The post graduate students are nurtured by the best of well trained doctorate faculty with an experience of long 20 years of teaching experience. The strength of undergraduate students is huge and have an abundant choice of combinations with mathematics, as one of the optional to choose from.

The curriculum ranges from mathematical concepts to techno-savvy computer programming skills through FOSS tools like Scilab and Maxima. In addition, the certificate programmes will enrich them with Python, LaTeX and Beamer and trainings on Mental ability and Core Mathematics will help them succeed in all the Preliminary and Bank examinations and JAM –IIT entrance exams for their better progressions.

A comprehensive syllabi in the PG programme includes Basic Statistics conducive for NET/UGC-CSIR examinations.

Self learning through add-on courses through MOOCs and IGNOU, Project work, Newsletters, Ramanujan Club activities, regular workshops/conferences, certificate courses, a strong feedback system and strong alumni network are some of the best practices of the department.
