Scholarships

  • A number of Scholarships have been constituted to support students financially and are disbursed as per the State Government regulations. The Scholarships are:

Conduct & Etiquette

  • Student should be punctual and regular in attending classes
  • Student should wear their ID cards in the campus
  • Assignments & Appraisal will be conducted periodically
  • Impertinent behaviour on and off the classrooms, discourtesy towards members of the staff or any act which affects the discipline of the college will be severely dealt with.
  • Students should conform to dress etiquette
  • Students are not permitted to use cell phones in the college premises. If used, it will be confiscated and a penalty of Rs. 500 will be levied.
  • Littering, defacing of the walls & furniture in the college premises are punishable.
  • An act of indiscipline such as ragging will be dealt stringently


Examinations

  • Student’s assessment is done through internal and external evaluation.
  • Internal evaluation is creatively done through quiz, student seminars & group discussions in addition to the tests & assignments which are held periodically. On the basis of class performance & attendance, internal assessment marks will be awarded at the end of each semester.
  • Credits will be awarded for active participation in co-curricular and extracurricular activities during the semester. All students should mandatorily participate in any one of the activities.
  • Declaration of the results includes the aggregate of theory, practical and internal marks


Assembly

  • An assembly provides a common platform for developing and sharing values thereby creating a very positive ethos. It provides the space for faculty and student community to come together for some time which helps in reconnecting with the entire college. In GSC, daily assemblies are held which is mandatory for all students. This activity opens up a plethora of oppurtunities for students to imbibe the spirit of togetherness and display their talents. Students host this activity where they deliberate upon contemporary issues, eminent personalities and value building.


Mentoring

  • 20 students are mentored by a faculty who records both personal and academic progress.
  • Parents are informed about their performance. Feedback from parents is documented and implemented for effective functioning of the college.


On Ragging

  • Ragging means ‘Any disorderly conduct whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any other student, indulging in rowdy or undisciplined activities which causes or likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or a junior student or asking the students to do any act or perform something which such student will not in the ordinary course and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of a fresher or a junior student’.
    “Ragging in all its forms is totally banned in this institution including in its departments, constituent units, all its premises (academic, residential, sports, kiosks, cafeteria and the like) whether located within the campus or outside and in all means of transportation of students whether public or private. The institution shall take strict action including but not limited to criminal proceeding and/or cancellation of admission against those found guilty of ragging and/or of abetting ragging and the burden of proof shall be lie on the perpetrator of alleged ragging and not on the victim. An offence of Ragging may be charged either on a written complaint by the affected or on independent finding of the Anti Ragging Cell. The College is bound by the UGC Regulations on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions 2009.”
    Punishment for Ragging: Depending on the nature and gravity of the offence as established by the Anti Ragging Committee of the University, those found guilty of ragging shall be liable for any one or more of the following punishment. The decision of the Anti Ragging Committee shall be final and binding. • Cancellation of admission. • Suspension from attending classes.

  • Cancellation of admission.
  • Suspension from attending classes.
  • Withholding/withdrawing scholarship/fee concession and other benefits.
  • Debarring from appearing in any test/examination or other evaluation process.
  • Withholding results.
  • Debarring from representing the College in any fest. Sports or other such events.
  • Suspension/expulsion from the hostel.
  • Rustication from the College for a period up to 4 semesters.
  • Expulsion from the College and consequent debarring from admission to any other institution.
  • Fine of Rs.25000/-
  • In the case of offences of very serious/grievous nature, referring the case to the Police, in addition to any other punishment
  • Collective punishment where the offence is committed collectively by a group or by a class making it difficult or not possible to identify specific persons.

Parent Teacher Meetings

  • Parent teacher meeting is held in each semester to apprise about the student performance & progress.
  • Counselling is done for students as per their requirements


Sports

  • Indoor and outdoor sports facilities are made available for most of the games. The students of our college have represented the college at the University, state and national level events. A well-equipped 12 station gymnasium is also established.
  • The college conducts an Annual Sports meet during the even semester of every academic year to encourage and identify students who excel in sports.
  • Interclass sports events namely, Chess, Kabaddi, Cricket, Throwball, Volleyball and Badminton are held every year.


Hostel

  • GSC provides hostel facility for boys. Girls are accommodated in 3 neighbouring Government College Hostels. In addition, students of the institution are accommodated in more than 25 community hostels in the city.

Counselling Cell

  • GSC understands that college students experience a great deal of stress from intra and interpersonal relationship, rigors of academic work and adolescence. Realising the need to take a comprehensive approach to the promotion of mental health, fostering emotional resilience, a counselling cell has been established with 17 faculty counsellors, trained in students’ counselling by the Premiere National Institute - NIMHANS Bangalore. Students are guided to seek counsellors who help them to overcome socio- cultural, emotional and psychological issues. Counsellors ensure emotional wellbeing, and promote positive attitude in students.
  • In addition counselling cell organises awareness programs inviting experts from the field of student psychology.


Kushala – Health Initiative

  • Kushala is a healthcare initiative of GSC which aims to sensitize and create awareness in students about health issues and various current problems affecting health. Kushala organises lectures on a wide variety of topics inviting experts in the field. Annual Health check- up camps are organised for students and faculty.


Blood Group Mapping

  • The blood group mapping of all the students and faculty are carried out, and a database of this is maintained. This has helped students to not only know their blood group but also in promoting blood donation towards the noble cause of saving lives.. In spite of the tight academic schedule, students and faculty have travelled great distances at odd hours and heartily volunteered to donate blood and save lives during medical emergencies.


Sahakari – Mid Day Meal

  • GSC has a unique initiative “Sahakari”- mid-day meal programme sponsored by the faculty. Mid day meals are provided to students hailing from economically backward classes and have long distances to commute to college. The aim of this initiative is to help students improve their wellbeing, and reach their full potential.


Placements

  • The placement cell of GSC is actively engaged in not only hiring activities but also organizes various training and developmental activities that help in personality grooming to enhance employability of students. A series of programs namely Manavathe, Vikasana, Sahayog, Naipunya Nidhi have been made available to build employability skills among students. In addition, industry representatives are invited to appraise students on job requirements. A wide range of career opportunities are made known to learners through placement cell activities. A series of skill training programs are also offered in this regard.


Prevention of Sexual Harassment cell                                                         

  • With regard to the Supreme Court Judgment and guidelines issued in 1997 to provide for the effective enforcement of the basic human right of gender equality and guarantee against sexual harassment and abuse, more particularly against sexual harassment at work places, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued circulars since 1998, to all the universities/colleges, advising them to establish a permanent cell and a committee to develop guidelines to combat sexual harassment, violence against women and ragging at the universities and colleges. It has further advised the universities/colleges to be proactive by developing a conducive atmosphere on the campus for treating woman respectfully. Keeping the UGC and the Supreme Court guidelines in view, Government Science College has constituted a committee against sexual harassment since 2009 to provide a healthy and congenial atmosphere to the staff and students of the college. The Sexual Harassment Redressal committee consists of members of the faculty, administration, student’s representative, NGO representative and Police woman is committed to: Ø Observe the law and Supreme Court guidelines on Sexual Harassment Ø Sensitize the campus community on gender issues Ø Addressing complaints from victims Ø Students can register a complaint here, send a mail to gscblr@gmail.com or lodge a complaint in person with the Principal or Convenor, Sexual Harassment Redressal Cell. The College shows zero tolerance towards gender-based violence so that cultures of impunity, silence and complicity could be eliminated. Details will be kept confidential.


Grievance Redressal Cell

  • The institution is sensitive to the concerns of Students. They are free to express their issues through suggestion box, student welfare officer, class mentors, student liaison officer and principal.


Ananya –Womens Cell

  • ‘Ananya’- is a proactive women’s cell of the institution. It strives to create awareness about issues concerned with women and organize programs to empower them. One of the important activities of Ananya is to train Girl students in self- defence. It also takes up the onus of organizing awareness lectures on a variety of topics like Personal grooming and Hygiene, Health, Gender sensitization, Women rights, Legal issues, Yoga etc. by inviting experts .


Endowment Prizes

  • GSC has also constituted a number of Endowment Prizes to encourage meritorious students.


Spandana – ‘Sale for a cause’

  • Spandana – ‘ sale for a cause’ is an unique endeavour of GSC which is organized in the college for the benefit of the student community. Faculty members pool in items/articles useful to students and put them up for sale. The proceeds of the sale is utilized for the student support systems like the Mid -day meal, ‘Sahakari’ scheme.


Self -Defence Programme for Girls

  • In today's world girls are independent and they face problems of stalking, molesting, harassment etc. To deal with such problem it is necessary that they should be trained to strongly defend themselves to obviate untoward incidents. GSC trains girls in self defence where they are taught how to fight, handle and defend themselves skillfully.


Equal Oppurtunity Cell

  • The cell oversees the effective implementation of policies and programmes for disadvantaged groups, to provide guidance and counselling with respect to academic, financial, social and other matters and to enhance the diversity within the campus. Under the leadership of Prof. Ramachandrappa, Associate Professor, Department of Kannada, this cell makes sure students from all backgrounds, be it women, studetns with disabilities, students belonging to minority groups or marginalised castes are given equal oppurtunity in all the processes in the college during their tenure.


Student Welfare Officer

  • Student welfare officer not only provides information and guidance to students but also addresses their grievances and resolves issues encountered in the campus.


Campus Life

  • To make students’ life in the campus experiential and filled with fun, GSC has various clubs. These club activities help students to pursue their interests, develop their potential and make learning a joyous process. Clubs provide students an enjoyable break from the rigors of academics.

Cultural Activities

  • Cultural activities and programs are organised to encourage and give expression to students’ talents. Nada Nudi Habba and annual cultural competitions are some of the events held to showcase the talents of students. Students are encouraged to participate in inter-collegiate and inter-university competitions and fests.


Canteen

  • The canteen caters to the staff and students of the college. It provides hygienic and wholesome food at subsidized rates.


Yoga

  • Yoga the ancient science of physical and mental wellbeing has been proven to be extremely effective in helping students to be calmer, happier and more focussed. GSC provides opportunities to students to learn Yoga which assists in the holistic wellbeing of students.


Star Party

  • One of the most exciting activities of GSC is “Star Party” organized by the Raman science club. Students meet in the campus to observe celestial bodies in the night sky.
