Sri. B.K.Mariappa, a renowned merchant of Nagartha Lingayat community of Bengaluru bequeathed all his properties at the young age of 35 years itself under a will and as a result, B.K.Mariappa’s Charities took its birth on 12-03-1914.
B.K.Mariappa’s Hostel was started on 01-07-1921 with free lodging and boarding facilities entirely on secular basis for deserving poor students. So far thousands of students have been benefited from this institution and all of them are well settled in life serving the society all-round the country and abroad.
B.K.Mariappa’s Hostel Old Boys’ Association was formed in 1946 and it helped the Charities to get more income by way of rents from the buildings, constructed out of the donations from the old boys and philanthropists which facilitated to accommodate more number of boy students.
The Girls’ Hostel started during 1999 in a rented building was inaugurated by Sri H.Narasimhaiah, an old student of our Hostel, follower of Gandhian philosophy and former Vice Chancellor of Bengaluru University. During 2002 it was moved to our own building, inaugurated by Dr. Kiran Bedi I.P.S. and this accommodated more number of girl students.
The students besides free boarding and lodging have got a good play ground, well equipped library, free medical facilities. The best boy and the best girl in the two respective hostels are honoured with incentives every year during Hostel Day celebration. Deserving students are awarded scholarships by our Hostel Old Boys’ Association, individual patrons and organizations like Rotary Club etc. every year.
The Students’ Association, formed under the style, Ashoka Sangha during 1947 just after procuring independence with a view to inculcate the noble teachings of Emperor Ashoka is enriching the students’ literary and sports activities. Many Inter Hostel competitions are conducted every year, prizes are awarded and Rolling Shields presented.
A few years ago, establishing an Old Age Home was thought over, the construction of which is now in progress at Tarahunase grama, Jala Hobli, Bengaluru North Taluk, Bengaluru. The Shilanyasa was performed by Sri K.Dinesh, an old student of our hostel and one of the co – founders of Infosys Ltd. and celebration programme was inaugurated by Sri. Krishna Bhyre Gowda, Agricultural Minister, Government of Karnataka.
Our Charities celebrated its Silver, Golden, Diamond, Platinum and 80 years’ Jubilees in the respective years in a befitting manner and celebrated “Centenary” in December 2014.
